NAEP assessment
During 1970s and 1980s, research focused on how components of the writing process were related to specific variables: language skills, apprehension, thought, and prior knowledge. (brief description of each part- language skills, apprehension, thought, and prior knowledge?) All of the studies showed positive association of the writing process. In 1992, based on 29,500 students in 1,500 schools, officials commented that the writing process was associated with higher average writing proficiency among students. Although it is one of fewer studies focusing on the relations of instructional approach to the quality of written products, but it does provide clear evidence about what kind of instruction is regarded as “ process writing.”
ERIC study
Late 1980s to 2003, experimental study was conducted to measure the quality of students'written products as a result of using the writing process. Both Robinson and Croes studies indicate the positive effects of the writing process. Two experimental examinations were conducted by Scannella and Bruno to measure how instruction in the writing process affected the overall quality of the products and both studies found that the writing of students taught using the writing process approach was rated superior to that of students using the traditional method.

Lucy Calkins uses observational method to observe the child’s daily writing behavior and documents their revision process. She finds out that the student writing product improves as she internalized a repertoire of writing strategy, but her method was criticized for not experimental and samples are small (not enough? Jing). Honeycutt's study(2002) introduced a grounded theory about what specific instructions exert the most influence on student's’ writing process and writing products.

A summary of important skills in all the researches
Prewriting- teaching student to develop their personal strategy in content, organization and structure. It is recursive and may emerge during the revision stage.
Revision instruction- one of the most important part of the composing process and a process of discovering what one has to say and adapting the text to maximize the clarity of the message. (move this information into the first paragraph? or incorporate it into a new, introductory paragraph?)

Jing: I haven't figured out how to change the color of the font. So I am sorry that I left my name in the text. The writing is fluent and summarizes the significant information of the part.

Taylor- Blue
Jing
Nicole- This was very well organized. Great summary of the text!
